Today it’s the fourth and last episode of our Super Bowl commercial breakdown. Catch up on episodes one, two, and three, sometime, all right?
Man, there was so much stuff I had to leave out of my Super Bowl mix.
I didn’t talk about the Seinfeld mini-reunion commercial.
Or the woman, Gwen, who quit her job on national TV on a GoDaddy commercial, and is going to start a puppet business.
Or the ad for Maserati’s Ghibli (ghee-blee?) car. That’s the one that had the child voiceover talking about hiding in the dark, away from giants. That sure had me going off in the wrong direction. I thought it was a movie preview.
Then there was the guy talking in German or Russian to the yellow M&M about sprinkling him on ice cream (that one was plain, er, peanut-funny).
Or the Transformers Age of Extinction preview (where was Shia LeBeouf?)
Or the RadioShack ad with ALF, Hulk Hogan, and Chucky ripping up the place.
Then there was the Volkswagen one with wings sprouting from engineers’ backs (and rainbows shooting out their behinds).
And the Muppets, rocking for Toyota…
Which all served to get people thinking about the companies in a new way, to keep them top-of-mind. That’s good for email copywriters to do too, whether for clients, or themselves. And fiction writers need to get in front of potential fans.
Doesn’t hurt to keep the American Family Insurance commercial about how dreams can change your life in mind, either.
Another deep breath…
I want to talk about someone, though. He’s pretty short, considering who he hangs around. He had a lot of criticism about his arm strength, size, and so on. He blew a chance to go to a Super Bowl. Did he get discouraged? No.
He actually went to the game. A game he knew he could never play in. That took a lot of guts, to look at something out of reach, for hours.
But why? Just to watch? And more. To see what it would be like, and, I think, to imagine himself with his team, down on the field.
He gave his career-best performance so far, and led his team to a championship just last Sunday.
He’s the Seattle Seahawks quarterback, Russell Wilson. It’s only his second year with his team, by the way. Just like Peyton Manning in his 2nd with Denver.
And that’s not to knock Manning, either. He’s done a great job so far—others have speculated he’s in the top 5 all-time, no matter what he chooses to do now.
Back to Wilson for a little bit. Something his dad told him really stuck with me. It’s really simple, too. And Russell said it to his teammates.
“Why not you?”
A huge life lesson, motivation, inspiration, and direction, all in three words. That’s what I like to call “having your mind open up.” It’s what happens to me when I hear beautiful music or finish watching a good movie. There’s a feeling I get, like I can do anything, and nothing can hold me back.
Has that kind of thing ever happened for you? I hope so, because then you can capitalize on it.
