Missing a Letter, And Tripe F…

Oops. I mean Triple F. Today’s Fabulous Fiction Friday here at Fiction and Copy Decoded, and that means a new prompt.

I got this idea from last Wednesday’s post when I said I was editing like a fiend.

Hmm. I thought I’d be posting about fiends today. And I might do that sometime.

But I decided to go in a different direction.

Well, if we add an “R” to fiends, we get “friends.” (There’s the grammar train again, going along the track. Hear that whistle screamin’?)

Anyway. Maybe you have friends that are fiends (real or imaginary). But I hope not.

Your prompt for Fab Fiction Friday today is:

Write a story or scene where a character forgets a letter in a word, and have that be the source of the conflict.

Here’s the fun part (or party).

Now, the word you pick for this is up to you. Beyond the setting, plot, and character set-up, you’ll have to pick a word…

We could say someone wrote the word “the” when he wanted to write “then” instead. Or “they.”

I also never said it had to be an English word, or a word from a robot language you’ve made up for subjugated humanoids to talk to the robot overlords…but that’s a bit too far, even for me.

But let’s get to the deeper issues. This is a bit harder than it looks. Because you’d have to make it clear to the readers what’s going on, while the characters won’t have a clue until the end.

It’s a tightrope, like most mysteries are, and I ain’t here to hand you a broomstick, umbrella, or what-have-ya (if we were up that high, I wouldn’t be thinking of anything but getting down to the ground, lemme tell ya).

What about the results of this missing letter?

Does someone pay a bill late? What happens?

Does someone invade a new consortium by accident? What happens (we don’t have to go far on that one)? Do they attack an ally because they think they’ve been betrayed? This is fiction, after all. We can do what we’d like here.

This is the second-to-last day of February. Monday will be March 2nd, and we’ll be on to the third month of 2015 already. I hope it’s been great for you so far. I know it has been for me.

Make it an awesome weekend with good memories, all right?

Until next week,
