Editing, Creating Universes, And My Take On Deadlines…

How’s it going? It’s a bit of the same old, same old for me today. I saw a post on another blog about editing today. I’m doing some editing for a client, and trying to work on footnotes at the same time (not the best practice in the world, but there are dozens of them, and I don’t think in-depth research on a dial-up connection is going to cut it).

Well, let me clarify…

I like to give myself time so I don’t have to rush around like crazy during the last two days of a deadline, you know what I’m saying? And since I’m not sure how long verifying all the footnotes is going to take, if I have to concentrate on content and footnotes, it may not shape up to be a pretty picture around here.

I don’t like staying up past 10:00 at night, either.

Which reminds me of my whole idea of editing.

I only like editing if somebody else already wrote all of it, or nearly all of it. For some reason, I don’t like editing my own stuff (that’s why editors, reviewers, and critique partners are so awesome).

That’s why I need to do writing and editing. You can’t get better at something by not doing it–there’s a lesson I need to learn more fully, I gotta say.

I write stuff for me, stuff for clients. Sometimes editing is creative, if I have to add some words here and there for clarification, but that’s nothing compared to starting with a blank page and building whole societies and universes from literally nothing.

And those are just the short stories (yes, it IS helpful to have a lot of the society your characters are in sketched out–helps you generate potential conflicts for them to tackle)…

Which is why I need to write more gaslight fantasy using a detective I put into a short story–same world, different dealings-with and what-have-ya for him to go through.

But as far as editing, I don’t feel as creative when I’m doing it (maybe down the road that’ll change). I’ve done book editing and email editing for clients (not a lot of fiction editing, though–proofreading, sure). I probably need to get a Services page up here at Fiction and Copy Decoded.

But that’s enough about me…

What about you? Do you just love editing? Or would you rather skip it altogether? Not that I’m suggesting you do that…

Drop me a line in the comments. I’d like to hear your thoughts on this.

Until next time,

Thanks for stopping by. I've almost always been interested in writing, among other things. Along with discovering pop culture, I've uncovered a lot about the craft over the past 10 years. And whether you're a fiction writer or email copywriter, I'm here to pass on what I've found out. And have a ton of fun in the process.
