Making What’s Special, More Special?

How was your weekend? Mine was awesome, even though I didn’t get papers or comics, which was fine. Yesterday was Memorial Day here in the U.S. (for non-U.S. readers), the day we remember those who sacrificed their lives so that we might live ours freely.

If you’re current or former military, thank you.

For those of you who did observe Memorial Day, where did you spend it? I won’t ask what you ate, but I hope it was awesome.

Really, where did you spend it? Park? Family home? A big convention center with people you care about?

That’s fine.

My point?

Emotions are powerful things, especially in emails, short stories, and what-have-ya. And a lot of times emotions are tied to people and/or places where those emotions are experienced.

When I said “family home,” what did you see, in your mind? You saw something, most likely, and it’s quadrillion-to-one odds against that it’s anything like what I see (and I have about 4 houses I could think of, at this point).

That’s why settings are so important to fiction and copywriting–because you can suggest things that mean something impactful to different people. There are certain sights, smells, and sounds that go along with each one individually, or that might be common to all of them (maybe things like alarm clocks, the smell of baked cookies, and more). And those emotions lead to other emotions and feelings, which lead to…you get the idea.

Ask yourself how you feel about a certain place, and why. Then work it in to your story or copy and see where that takes you.
