How’s your week been so far? Mine’s been pretty good–got the blog done this week, which is great. Got more of the novel outline done, too, and decided to continue the theme about following directions for Triple F this week.
Your fiction writing prompt for Fabulous Fiction Friday is:
Your character gets a set of directions that promise dire consequences if they’re not followed to the letter. What are they, and what happens?
First of all, this is fiction–threatening somebody on paper or out loud is a crime in most places around the world–so we’ll say that upfront.
Okay, now on to the interesting stuff.
Your character’s gender, backstory, and what-have-ya are up to you. Okay, what are the dire consequences–“if you don’t deliver by midnight you’ll be turned into a frog”?
Why would your character want to follow these directions–are they being compelled in some way or other? What happens if they just walk away?
Okay, example time…
How about we have a character who has to deliver three bat wings by midnight, in two days? And if he doesn’t, his curse won’t be lifted, and he’ll be doomed to have everything he ever drinks taste like sawdust? What if he’s afraid of bats–what then? Which will win out?
Or a girl who discovers she can turn invisible and wants to get the power taken away–and if she doesn’t follow the directions on the sheet, she’ll have to stay invisible forever, because her powers are getting more and more out of control. There’s conflict for you.
All right, that’s about enough to get the snowball rolling down the hill, so to speak.
July 2016 is about halfway over, and I hope you’re making it awesome.
Make it an awesome weekend, with good memories, all right?
Until next time (and week),
