Time and Space Limits = Time Bombs? Nope…

How’s it going? It’s Wednesday here (it probably is for you too, unless you’re one of my Australian followers–I’m pretty sure I do have a couple of those–hey guys!)

Don’t really know what that means, so let’s get to it anyway. Today will be a bit of a ramble.

And you may be wondering about that title. Here you go:

After thinking about the podcast interview I did, I realized I was EXTREMELY conscious of the time limit, always trying to edit down, chip off things from what I was trying to say, and what-have-ya.

And I know for a fact some things and good points that I had to say got lost (for reasons discussed partially in this post over this way). I told my brother (who’s been on other peoples’ shows more than I have), and he said “Yeah, you’ll miss a lot of ’em.”

It was slowly brought to my attention as the interview zipped on that I was into waaaaay too much stuff to cover in only an hour. Stuff like:

Writing (fiction, email copy, blog posts, explainer scripts)

Console gaming (old Nintendo/SNES, PS2)

Mobile gaming (Egg Inc., Virtual Beggar, and a whole bunch more–I wasn’t even able to talk about all the games I enjoy playing with an emulator on my laptop because I think the 3.5″ screen on my phone is too small)

Online gaming (Runescape mostly, which I actually blogged about over here from a marketing perspective)

Movies/TV (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Spider-Man, Batman, and enough TV shows to make your head spin–most of them are crime dramas like NCIS though, but not all of them)

Foreign languages and culture (I only know enough Japanese to get lost anywhere in less than 5 minutes, but I’m learning more and I really like it)

Music (both listening and playing–I like pop, blues, jazz, classical, which I play a lot of, too, mostly on trumpet)

Did we talk about some of this? Yeah, but I don’t think even 4 hours would have covered it. (And I didn’t even get to talk about the freelancer’s epiphany, or sorts–which actually happened for me during my school years–and should be the subject of another post.)

I had to pick and choose.

Which is my point-ola.

Sometimes with fiction and copy, you have to choose what the reader or prospect sees. There’s a famous iceberg analogy–something about 80% being below the water’s surface. And no, I didn’t come up with that–the Long Ridge webmaster Mary Rosenblum probably didn’t either. But she’s the one who first brought it up to me, I think.

Yes, you are limited. Maybe the fact that Lila was abandoned to suck power from the soil of the planet Zeke when she was three won’t make it into your story or book, but how that impacted her life, which you’ll show when she interacts with people, definitely will.

Bullets (the writing kind) are great for showing benefits and things like that, but depending on space, you’ll have to pick the big points (in a sales letter, you may not have to, but for shorter mediums like email, you probably will).

Everything means something to someone. It just depends on whether they’ll show you or not. If it’s important enough to them, it’ll permeate everything, and you’ll usually see for yourself.
